Gartner Research predicts that mobile phones will overtake desktop personal computers as the most common Web access device worldwide by 2013. In fact, in the first quarter of 2011, smartphone adoption was up 15%, meaning 31% of mobile subscribers used a smartphone. And that number is expected to grow rapidly. Experts and analysts also expect the number of people accessing the mobile internet to rise to over 1 billion by 2013. In the US and Western Europe, 90 percent of mobile subscribers have an Internet-ready phone.

So what about some statistics for mobile marketing? Figures as of late May 2011 have indicated that 60 percent of consumers click through mobile ads on phones at least once a week. Predictions for 2011 indicate that the US mobile ad market will exceed $1 billion dollars this year, and mobile ad formats are currently dominated by messaging, display ads, search and video.

The statistics don’t lie. The mobile revolution is here, and businesses that want to stay on top of their markets will need to jump on board.
